EmComm Training

Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) consists of licensed amateurs who have voluntarily registered their qualifications and equipment for communications duty in the public service when disaster strikes. Every licensed amateur, regardless of membership in ARRL or any other local or national organization, is eligible for membership in the ARES. The only qualification, other than possession of an Amateur Radio license, is a sincere desire to serve.

The following courses are recommended or required for membership. Please see each course for information.

Introduction to Incident Command System
- ISC-100
- Description: Provides training and resources for personnel who require a basic understanding of the Incident Command System (ICS)
- Fees: No Charge / On-line course
- Required course for all members
Incident Command Training
- ICS-200
- Provides training and resources for personnel who are likely to assume a supervisory position within the Incident Command System (ICS). The primary target audiences are response personnel at the supervisory level.
- Fees: No Charge / On-line course
- Required course for EC, AEC's and for members wishing to be deployed outside the area
Introduction to the National Incident Management System (NIMS)
- IC-700
- Description: Provides training and resources for the National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents.
- Fees: No Charge / On-line course
- Required course for all members
Introduction to National Response Plan (NRP)
- IS-800
- Description: Provides training and resources for the National Response Plan (NRP). The NRP specifies how the resources of the Federal Government will work in concert with State, local, and tribal governments and the private sector to respond to Incidents of National Significance. The NRP is predicated on the National Incident Management System, or NIMS. Together the NRP and the NIMS provide a nationwide framework for working cooperatively to prevent or respond to threats and incidents regardless of cause, size, or complexity.

- Required for members who wish to be deployed outside the area
Level 1 Amateur Radio Emergency Communications
- EC-001
- Description: Introduction to Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. A basic course to raise awareness and provide additional knowledge and tools for any emergency communications volunteer. This course has 23 lesson units and is expected to take approximately 25 hours to complete over an 8-week period. See course Syllabus. Required Student Activities
- Fees: ARRL Member: $45 Non-member: $75
- Required for EC and AEC's and anyone wishing to be deployed out of the area
Level 2 Amateur Radio Emergency Communications
- EC-002
- Description: Intermediate Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. A more in-depth study into amateur radio emergency communications to enhance the skills and knowledge received from previous experience. Level I ARECC is required prior to taking Level II. This course has 20 lesson units and is expected to take approximately 25 hours to complete over an 8-week period. See course Syllabus. Required Student Activities.

- Reccommended for ARES leadership at the EC level and above
Level 3 Amateur Radio Emergency Communications
- EC-003, Revision 2
- Description: Advanced Amateur Radio Emergency Communications. This is the third and final stage of the 3-level ARRL Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Courses. This is a course for those in leadership or aspiring to leadership positions. Revision 2 is a significant rewrite that brings the course current with the post-9/11/01 Department of Homeland Security (DHS) paradigm. This course has 23 learning units and is expected to take approximately 25 hours to complete over a 12-week period. See course Syllabus. Required Student Activities
